Overview

This article gives an overview of how the Brightspace tools integrate. By integrating the tools within a course, assessing and collaborating become easier and more engaging.

How Brightspace Tools Integrate

Why Integration is a Good Idea

There are many Brightspace tools that can be integrated to streamline activities and support functions not available in the individual tools. As an example, the Groups tools lets you subdivide your course into cohorts and the Locker tool can be used to create file storage areas for student work. But, when connected together, the Groups and Locker tools can create file storage areas that are accessible to members of predefined subset of the classlist, promoting collaboration and teamwork.

Integrating the Tools

Integrating Brightspace tools is a simple operation. There are connection points in the various tools that allow for the connection of other tools. The example on the right shows a discussion topic and the form for attaching a rubric and a grade item. While each tool acts slightly differently, this example is pretty typical of the mechanism for attaching tools.

Best Practices

  • Connect the tools together. Using the full suite of tools in Brightspace is great, but connecting them together will be a time saver for you and your students. For example, you may already use grade items and rubrics in the assessment of discussion posts, but integrating the tools by connecting the discussion topic, rubric, and grade item will simplify assessment, make feedback easier to find for students, and reduce the number of questions from students in their grades.
