About this article

This article includes information about purchasing a docking station for the HP EliteBook 840. It is intended for all students and employees participating in the E-Warrior Digital Life and Learning Program.

Do I really need a docking station?

Docking stations allow you to quickly connect monitors, local printers, keyboards, speakers, and other external devices to your laptop. Simply plug these devices into the ports on the docking station and then connect your laptop to the docking station. When you want to go mobile, disconnect your laptop and away you go. You can also plug a network cable into your docking station for wired network access whenever you dock. A docking station is also connected to an electrical outlet and recharges your laptop's battery while it's docked. Many people leave their docking station at their desk at home or at work. If you have a lot of peripherals that you are constantly plugging in and unplugging when working with your laptop at your desk, a docking station might be right for you. If you only have one external device or the only thing you plug in is your power cord, it's probably not worth it.

Will any HP docking station work?

No. HP laptops are only compatible with specific HP docking stations. If you purchased an HP docking station for your HP EliteBook 8460p, it will not work with your new HP EliteBook 840. The recommended docking station for the 840 is the HP UltraSlim Dock 2013 (MFG #D9Y32AA#ABA).

Where do I purchase a docking station?

Docking stations are available for purchase from the WSU Technical Support Center for $106. Send your request to OrderTech@winona.edu. Employees will need to provide a cost center number.
