The Cisco AnyConnect VPN software is pre-installed on your WSU laptop. Look for the Cisco folder in your Windows Start Menu or macOS Applications folder to get started. The Cisco AnyConnect VPN app can be found there. If you cannot find VPN on your device, use the following instructions to install or reinstall it.
Installing VPN on your WSU macOS Device
NOTE: You must be on campus to perform these steps! Open Managed Software Center from your Applications folder. Find Cisco AnyConnect VPN in the list and click Install. Wait 5-15 minutes for the install to complete. When the install is complete, VPN will launch automatically.
Installing VPN on your WSU Windows 10 Device
NOTE: You must be on campus to perform these steps! Open the Windows Start Menu at the bottom left of your screen. With the Start Menu open, just type the words Software Center. Click Software Center when it appears. Find Cisco AnyConnect VPN in the list and click Install. If the button just says Uninstall and is grayed out, then it's already installed!
Which VPN connection do I use?
Both VPN connections offer industry-standard security measures, they simply divide off resources from one another.
When using VPN, ensure you type in tunnel.winona.edu if you are a student and ot.winona.edu if you are an employee.
What is VPN?
VPN stands for Virtual Private Network. Cisco AnyConnect VPN is pre-installed on your WSU laptop and can be used to connect to the WSU network when you are off-campus. This software is available to both students and employees.
WSU's VPN differs from commercial VPN solutions such as NordVPN, ExpressVPN, and Private Internet Access VPN in that it does not offer advanced privacy for everyday browsing. Instead, WSU's VPN solution simply ensures a dedicated, secured, encrypted connection to the WSU network for access to work-based or class-based resources (such as network storage drives).
It is unnecessary to leave WSU VPN connected at all times unless you're actively performing work or class tasks while off campus.
