  • Intended Audience - Instructors interested in optimizing the D2L Course Home Page with powerful assessment tools, embed video content, aggregate news and relevant information feeds, and provide quick access to content and collaboration tools.

Before the Session

Before the Session: This is a hands-on session, so please bring your laptop if possible. If you cannot bring a laptop, one will be provided for you. In order to get the most out of this session, we encourage you to access your D2L course(s) and make sure you have a current or past course that can be used to build your own custom widgets.

General Description

In this session we will cover the basic steps of setting up a D2L Custom Widgets for your home page. The attendee will learn the following components of the system:

  • Setup and saving a custom widget
  • Introduce seven different custom widgets that are designed to address three categories of instruction
    • Assessment tools
      • Qualtrics Polls
      • Qualtrics surveys
      • Wiffiti
    • Content tools
      • Embedded YouTube content
      • RSS Feeds
      • Slide Share
    • Collaboration tools
      • VoiceThread
      • Wiffiti
  • Tailor your course home page and place the widgets you create where they will best engage learners.

Learning Outcomes

Following this session, you will be able to...

  • Create a custom widget for your home page
  • Manipulate that widget to provide basic to advanced content, assessment, and collaboration tools to your students.
  • Manage the placement of custom widgets on your course home pages.
