Bring Your Own Device (or BYOD) refers to the use of a personal device for WSU network services such as email. This includes phones, tablets, and other mobile devices.
When setting up email on these devices several special steps will be required to secure the device.
Apple Devices
On an Apple device you will see the following screens after configuring your email:
- It will make you aware that there is a passcode requirement.
- It will then prompt you to enter a 4 digit passcode.
- Reenter the 4 digit passcode.
- Your device is now encrypted and safe to use for the email app.
Android Devices
Encrypting an Android device may take up to an hour or more. Make sure to plug in your phone and set aside enough time to encrypt the device.
On an Android device you will need to take the following steps after configuring your email:
- First you must setup a PIN on your device. Go to your device's Settings screen, tap Security, tap Screen Lock, tap PIN or Password, and set a new PIN.
- To encrypt your phone open Settings, tap Security, tap Encrypt phone (or Encrypt tablet).
- Read the warning and follow its instructions then tap Encrypt phone (or Encrypt tablet).
- The device will prompt you for your PIN or password, enter it in to continue the encryption process.
- You will see a progress bar for the encryption process; simply let your phone sit and work its way through the encryption process.
