Bring Your Own Device (or BYOD) refers to the use of a personal device for WSU network services such as email. This includes phones, tablets, and other mobile devices.

When setting up email on these devices several special steps will be required to secure the device.

Apple Devices

On an Apple device you will see the following screens after configuring your email:

  • It will make you aware that there is a passcode requirement.

  • It will then prompt you to enter a 4 digit passcode.

  • Reenter the 4 digit passcode.

  • Your device is now encrypted and safe to use for the email app.

Android Devices

If you would like to use WSU email on your non-WSU Android device without encrypting it, please follow these steps:

  • Open your internet browser
  • In the address bar type email.winona.edu then hit enter. The My Webmail login page should appear

  • In the address bar, click the star icon to create a bookmark to this page

  • Name the bookmark "WSU email" and click save

  • On the screen that shows your bookmarks, click and hold the WSU email box until you see a menu appear

  • On the menu, choose "Add shortcut to home"

  • Click on the WSU email bookmark once again to go to the WSU email login page
  • Click on the round circle next to "This is a private computer"

  • Enter your full WSU email address and password to sign in.
  • Once you're signed in, your WSU email will appear the same way it does if you were to check it from an internet browser on a desktop or laptop computer.

On an Android device you will need to take the following steps after configuring your email:

  • First you must setup a PIN on your device. Go to your device's Settings screen, tap Security, tap Screen Lock, tap PIN or Password, and set a new PIN.

  • To encrypt your phone open Settings, tap Security, tap Encrypt phone (or Encrypt tablet).

  • Read the warning and follow its instructions then tap Encrypt phone (or Encrypt tablet).

  • The device will prompt you for your PIN or password, enter it in to continue the encryption process.
  • You will see a progress bar for the encryption process; simply let your phone sit and work its way through the encryption process.
  • Your device is now encrypted and safe to use for the email app.
