Checking your email on an encrypted Android device

If you would like to continue to use your Email app to check email, then your device must be encrypted. Encrypting an Android device may take up to an hour or more. Make sure to plug in your device and set aside enough time to encrypt the device. Most Android devices will only encrypt if they are charged over 80% and are currently plugged into a power source.

To encrypt your Android device you will need to take the following steps after configuring your email app:

  • First you must setup a PIN on your device. Go to your device's Settings screen, tap Security, tap Screen Lock, tap PIN or Password, and set a new PIN.

  • To encrypt your phone open Settings, tap Security, tap Encrypt phone (or Encrypt tablet).

  • The device will prompt you for your PIN or password, enter it in to continue the encryption process.
  • You will see a progress bar for the encryption process; simply let your phone sit and work its way through the encryption process.
  • Your device is now encrypted and safe to use for the email app.
