Class storage
About this article
This article includes a general description of a "class store" network storage space, instructions for faculty on how to request one, instructions for faculty and students on how to access these storage spaces, and an overview of their major features, functions, and academic applications. This article is intended for instructors and students.
What's a Class Store?
An instructor can request that a network storage directory or folder be created for the duration of a course that is only accessible to the instructor and students of that course. Each students has a personal subfolder and there is a shared folder that everyone can use. These files are also accessible via web browser by account owner and secure web browser.
Location
Class storage is located on a network share found on your computer as follows:
- On a PC they are found on the T drive = "\\winona.edu\dfs\Community\ClassStorage"
- On a Mac they are found through the Finder under the menu: Go->Connect to Server. In the dialog box look for "smb://store.winona.edu/classes/"
Each course directory will be named according to the year/term and the 6 digit MNSCU ID of that course. Each course will have a 1 GB Storage Quota Limit. Access to each course will be determined by the class roster.
Requesting Class Storage
Class storage may be requested by Faculty or Staff teaching a course as that course becomes available within the MNSCU tracking system. Faculty members will need to know the year/term of the course along with the department and the 6 digit MNSCU course ID for that course in the given year / term.
To request class storage, just go to https://w3.winona.edu/ClassStorage/
Upon completion of the course request form, Class storage will be created within 1 business day.
Accessing the Class Store
From on campus, use your WSU network username and password to access your class store. When off campus, you must first connect to the WSU network by using the VPN client included on your laptop.
Back-Up Class Storage Files
Class storage is per-semester storage solutions, so prior to the end of each semester, faculty and students must save the necessary files from class storage to their individual network storage, locally to their computer, or to an external device. Drag and drop the individual files or the folder to a location with sufficient storage space.
