English 111 - 1st Year Writing Class

  • 2 classes, xx students
  • Will be working in groups to produce mini documentaries
  • Semester long project - filming to begin after spring break - week 10

Class Location, Days and Times

  • March 31st, 2011 (Thursday)

  • 4:30 pm - 6:20 pm - Cindy at 5:00 pm

Outline of Project

  • Students to work in groups to produce mini documentaries 5 - 7 minutes in length
  • Topics will relate to course focus of gender and sexuality issues
    • Sex education
    • Domestic violence
  • Will use Flip cameras
  • Final version due for final exam
  • Need rough cut by week 15 - 4/19

Method

  • Interview people in community or campus
  • Topics and methods are highly flexible


Software/Hardware

  • iMovie (Mac)
  • STAR will create PowerPoint slides, with included Camtasia instructional videos for class training
  • Flip camcorders can be checked out at the Technical Support Center, Somsen 207.

Syllabus for 60 Min Training

Basic iMovie Overview

  • Flipcam training
    • Basic operating (what the buttons do)
    • What controls the Flip lacks (volume, etc.)
    • Zooming
    • Setting up software (including where to get from internet)
    • Getting files onto the machine
  • Downloading and saving raw data to DVD/external hard drive/student storage, etc. first
  • Warning about data loss from deleting inside iMovie
    • Backup data!!!
    • Saving and numbering versions successively (in case of data loss)
  • Importing data into software
  • Converting data if using MovieMaker2
    • mp4 needs to be converted to .wmv before it can be imported to MM2
  • Raw data can be used in iMovie as is (mp4)
  • Show pre-made movie and have students retrieve raw video files, then follow along to learn:
    • Importing video
    • Cutting/moving the clips
    • Cropping
    • Title screens
    • Subtitles/name intros
    • Transitions
    • Effects
    • Credits
    • Adding PowerPoint slides, images along with video
    • Audio - background audio/music
  • Go over copyright info if using photos/music that isn't the student's
  • Q & A
  • Length - 5 - 7 minutes
