About this article

This article includes instructions for enabling Turnitin tools in a Brightspace Assignment Submissions Folder. It is intended for WSU instructors currently using Brightspace and interested in assessing writing quality and originality using Turnitin.

Overview

The Turnitin tools, referred to collectively as Turnitin Feedback Studio, that are integrated with Brightspace include OriginalityCheck and GradeMark. These services add new functionality to Brightspace assignment folders, allowing instructors to assess whether a student's paper includes plagiarized content and to provide feedback to the student, respectively. In order to use tools, instructors must enable them within each Brightspace assignment folder.

Enabling Turnitin tools

Configuring your assignment folder

Fig. 1. Location of the Turnitin tab in the folder definition.
  1. From your Brightspace course homepage, select Assignments from the Assessments menu.
  2. Select the New Submission Folder button.
  3. On the Properties tab, enter a name for the folder.
  4. On the Properties tab under Grade Item, select an existing grade item or select the New Grade Item link and create an item on the fly. Set the Out of field to the maximum points for the assignment. Click here for more information on associating grade items with assignment folders.
  5. Select the Save button to save the changes you made on the Properties tab.
  6. If you want to set a start date, due date, and/or end date on your folder, select the Restrictions tab and set those dates. Select the Save button to save the changes you made on the Restrictions tab. Turnitin uses the start date that you specify as the date on which it will begin processing files. Consistent with Brightspace, it refers to this as Start Date in the Turnitin options. Turnitin uses the end date you specify as the date on which it will no longer process files. Unlike Brightspace, it refers to this as Due Date in the Turnitin options. Don't confuse this due date with the folder due date in Brightspace. If you do not specify a start date or end date on the Restrictions tab, then Turnitin will set its start and due (i.e., end) dates to the start date and end dates of the course, respectively.

Setting basic Turnitin options

  1. Select the Turnitin tab (Fig 1).
  2. Check Enable Turnitin for this folder. It may take a moment for the More Options in Turnitin button to activate.
  3. Check Allow learners to see Turnitin similarity scores in their submission folder, if you want your students to see your feedback from Turnitin. This feedback includes the originality report and any comments you left during the assessment process.
  4. Under Frequency, determine whether you want to have Turnitin automatically parse all student submissions in the folder or just the ones you select.
  5. Set the date the feedback you enter through Turnitin's GradeMark tool will be accessible by your students.
  6. Select the Save button.

Setting more Turnitin options

When you select the More Options in Turnitin button and then select Optional Settings, you will be able to configure Turnitin to your specifications. Please watch the video for more information on these settings. Here are some highlights:

  • Setting Allow submission of any file type to Yes allows students to upload files that cannot be processed by Turnitin (e.g., images) for the purpose of generating an Originality Report, but that could still be evaluated using the GradeMark tool.
  • Allow late submissions and Allow students to view Originality Reports cannot be changed under Optional Settings. These are set in other tabs.
  • The Originality Report generation and resubmissions choices under Optional Settings refer to a "due date." Please note that this is actually the end date that you specified in the Restrictions tab when configuring your assignment folder. You may notice that the due date in Turnitin is 24 hours later than the end date in Brightspace. This buffer is included to allow additional time to process files. The end date you specify on the Restrictions tab controls when the folder actually closes.
  • The Would you like to save these options as your defaults under Optional Settings allows you to automatically apply the settings to all subsequent folders. Then you would not need to go through these steps each time.

Tips

  • Hit the Save button often during the definition process. It will help to guarantee your choices are perpetuated through the definition.
  • Set your browser to allow pop-up windows or you will not see the additional options for Turnitin configuration.
