About this article

This article provides instructions for exporting and importing your Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE) favorites. It is intended for all members of the WSU community.

Why export your IE bookmarks?

IE allows you to bookmark any website you visit, saving that site's unique address or URL to a personalized list. IE refers to these saved addresses as favorites. Later, instead of searching for the site or entering its address manually, you can simply select it from your favorites list. You can manage your favorites list by renaming links, organizing them into folders, and deleting them. Building a list of favorites is a great way to create a personalized learning environment, customized to meet your needs and, if you put a lot of time into it, you don't want to lose it. IE saves your favorites list locally on your device's hard drive. If something happens to your hard drive or you move to a new device, you don't want to have to build your favorites list again from scratch. You need to know how to save or export your list and copy or import it to another device.

Exporting

There are two ways to backup your IE favorites. Choose the method that makes the most sense to you. You will need to use the corresponding import method.

Method 1: Exporting to a file

  1. Open File Explorer by selecting the Computer icon on your desktop or the File Explorer icon on the task bar
  2. On the left sidebar under Computer, select Boot/Programs/Data (C:)
  3. In the folder tree, open the Users folder and then open the folder named with your username (e.g., kgraetz)
  4. Copy the entire Favorites folder to network storage, cloud storage, or an external hard drive (Figure 1)

Method 2: Copying the Favorites folder

Importing

Method 1: Importing from a file

  1. Open File Explorer by selecting the This PC icon on your desktop or the File Explorer icon on the task bar
  2. On the left sidebar under This PC, select Windows (C:)
  3. In the folder tree, open the Users folder and then open the folder named with your username (e.g., kgraetz)
  4. Copy the contents of your saved Favorites folder into this Favorites folder.

Method 2: Pasting the Favorites folder
