Brightspace Quiz Question Converter

Intended Audience

This article is intended for instructors interested in using Brightspace Quiz tool for online assessments in their courses.

Overview

If you have an exam in Word that you print and distribute to students in a face-to-face course, you can convert that file to an Excel CSV (Comma Separated Value) file type that can be quickly imported into a quiz in your D2L Brightspace course.

Convert the Word file to an Excel CSV file

Prepare your Word doc

Before we convert the questions in your Word document into a .CSV, we need to remove all of the text formatting. It is a good practice make a copy of the Word doc to prevent accidental changes to your original file.

1. Open the Word file and drag across the questions and responses to select all of the text.
2. Press CTRL + X (Cmd + X on a Mac) to cut the text from the document. You must do a Cut, using Copy will not work for this process.
   
3. From the Home tab, click the drop-down button in the upper left for Paste. (See #1 at right.)
4. Click on the Keep Text Only option. (See #2 at right.)
5. Put an asterisk symbol directly to the left of the correct response letter or number for every question:
   
6. Make sure there is a blank line between each of the questions. If not, add one.
7. Drag across all the questions and answers to select all of the text.
8. Press CTRL + C (Cmd + C on the Mac) to copy.

Upload the Excel CSV file to your D2L Brightspace course

1. Open a web browser and navigate to the Quiz Question Converter. You will find it at https://mnsite.learn.minnstate.edu/shared/quizConverter/index.html.
2. Click in the large data-entry box and press CTRL + V (Cmd + V on the Mac) to paste.
3. Scroll down and set the default values for point value and difficulty. This will be applied to all questions and can be modified once the questions re in Brightspace.
4. Then click the green “Convert” button.
5. A Success! Message should display at the bottom of the screen, and an Excel CSV file will be downloaded to your computer.
   

To add the questions to a new quiz in Brightspace

1. Go to your course in D2L Brightspace.
2. From Assessments menu, select Quizzes.
3. Click the New Quiz button.
4. Enter a Name for the quiz.
5. Click the Add/Edit Questions button.
6. Click the Import button and select Upload a File.
7. Drag and Drop the Excel CSV file OR click Browse Files button to locate the file in your Downloads folder and select it, then click the Open button in the lower right corner. The default file name for Quiz Question Converter output is quiz.csv.
8. Wait for the file to complete uploading.
9. Click Import All and review the questions.
10. If you need to change the point values for any questions, click the Edit Values button and make the appropriate changes.
11. Set your preferences on the Restrictions and Assessment tabs.
12. Save and Close the quiz.

To add the questions to an existing quiz in Brightspace

1. Go to your course in D2L Brightspace.
2. From Assessments menu, select Quizzes.
3. Click the arrow after the name of the quiz and select Edit.
4. Click the Add/Edit Questions button.
5. Click the Import button and select Upload a File.
6. Drag and Drop the Excel CSV file OR click Browse Files button to locate the file in your Downloads folder and select it, then click the Open button in the lower right corner. The default file name for Quiz Question Converter output is quiz.csv.
7. Wait for the file to complete uploading.
8. Click Import All and review the questions.
9. If you need to change the point values for any questions, click the Edit Values button and make the appropriate changes.
10. Save and Close the quiz.
