For meeting participants, joining a Zoom meeting is as easy as selecting the meeting link provided by the meeting organizer. Participants can join a meeting using a computer or the Zoom smartphone app and will typically not be required to sign in. Participants using computers that have connected to a Zoom meeting before will need to download and install a small application. This should happen automatically when joining your first meeting, but can also be done manually at any time. Host of Zoom meetings must sign in to Zoom using their StarID credentials in order to be recognized as hosts.

Installing Zoom before your first meeting

If you have never used Zoom before, you will need to install the Zoom client on your computer or phone.

On your computer

Method 1 - From the meeting start page
  1. Select the meeting link provided to you by the meeting organizer. This will open your default web browser to a window that indicates that your meeting should start in a few seconds (Fig 1). Select the Download & run Zoom link and follow the directions on the screen to install the Zoom client.
  2. Close your browser. Close the Zoom client start screen if it opens.
Method 2 - From the Zoom Download Center
  1. Browse to the Zoom Download Center
  2. Select Download under Zoom Client for Meetings (FIg 2).
  3. Download and run the installer to install the application.
  4. Close your browser. Close the Zoom client start screen if it opens.

On your phone or tablet

Search for the Zoom app on the Apple App Store or Google Play. Download and install it as you would any phone or tablet app.

Join the meeting

Once Zoom is installed on your computer or phone, you are read to join meetings as a participant.

On your computer

  1. Select the link provided by the meeting organizer (e.g., in an email message) This should open your default browser and launch the meeting. You can also copy and paste the meeting link into your favorite web browser.
  2. If this is the first time you have joined a Zoom meeting on this computer, you will be presented with a Join Meeting window. Paste the meeting link into the Meeting ID or Personal Link Name field and enter your name into the field below it. Select Join. Chose whether to remember your name for future meetings.

On your phone

Method 1 - Select the meeting link

If you received the meeting link in an email message or text, select the link. The app will open and you will join the meeting.

Method 2 - Enter the Meeting ID or Personal Link
  1. Open the Zoom app
  2. Tap Join a Meeting
  3. Enter the part of the meeting link following the last forward slash "/". This will either be a series of numbers (i.e., the Meeting ID) or a personalized string of characters
  4. Tap Join
