In the new version of Outlook (2016), when receiving emails with Office Documents as attachments, just double-clicking to start editing as a function has been disallowed and will only open the document in “Read Only” mode (Editing is not allowed).

Mac

To edit documents that you receive as attachments in the email, we now have to either save the documents to the hard-disk or Open them with Preview first and then with Microsoft Office applications to edit them.

Best practices when editing documents received in the email are to always save a copy of the document on your hard-disk before you start editing them. This ensures that the original remains in your email protected and safe from any edits.

To learn how to do this follow these instructions:

1. When you receive an email with an Office document in the attachments, you can click on the Preview button next to the document you received as the attachment.

2. Then click the button that says “Open with Microsoft Word” or any other Office application. This should Open a new copy of the attachment that you can edit.

Another method of opening these attachments and editing them:

1. Double-click on the attachment in the email.

2. Click on “Duplicate”.

3. Save the file in one of your hard-disk folders and then start editing it.

PC

To edit documents received in Outlook (2016) on Windows 10, follow these instructions:

1. Open the email with the attached document.

2. Click on the arrow next to the attachment.

3. Click on “Save As”.

4. Save the document on your hard-disk and start editing it.
