Instructors use replacement strings in Brightspace courses to customize and personalize text displayed to students in certain Brightspace course tools. When instructors enter a predefined code that refers to a specific variable (e.g., {FirstName}) in the appropriate location in the text, Brightspace displays the text with that student's value inserted. For example, "Nice job {FirstName}!" would be displayed as "Nice job Ken!" for Ken and "Nice job Susan!" for Susan.

Where can replacement strings be used?

Replacement strings can be added whenever an instructor adds text using the Brightspace HTML Editor. Although there are tool-specific limitations, they are particularly useful when using the following:

  • Announcements
  • Course Homepage Widgets
  • Custom Navigation Bar Links
  • Navigation Bars
  • Mail Templates
  • Grades when adding bulk feedback
