Sign in to Zoom using guest credentials if you do not have a StarID and need to join a meeting configured to only allow authenticated access. In addition to StarID credentials, Zoom recognizes Google, Facebook, and Zoom personal account credentials as valid methods of authentication. Minnesota State students and employees should not use these methods of authentication and should use their StarID credentials instead.

StarID and SSO

If you are a Minnesota State student or employee, always use your StarID credentials to authenticate in Zoom and select the single sign on (SSO) option when prompted (Fig 1.1). Do not use any of these alternative methods.

Open the Zoom application

  • PC: You might already have a Zoom shortcut on your desktop. You can also select the Start button in the lower-left corner of the screen and type "Zoom" to find the shortcut. Consider pinning it to your taskbar.
  • Mac: Look in your Applications folder. Consider adding Zoom to your dock.
  • Phone or tablet: Open the Zoom app
  • If you can't find the application, download and install it.

Sign out if needed

If you signed in to a Zoom meeting previously with a personal Zoom account or your Google or Facebook credentials:

On your computer

  1. With the application open, select your avatar (Fig 1.1)
  2. Select Sign Out from the menu (Fig 1.2)
  3. Sign back in using the instructions below.

On your phone or tablet

  1. With the app open, select the Settings tab
  2. Select your name at the top of the Settings page
  3. Swipe down to the bottom of the page
  4. Select Sign Out
  5. Sign back in using the instructions below.

If you do not have a Minnesota State StarID, you can use any of these three methods to join a Zoom meeting that requires authentication. You will enter the meeting with "(Guest)" appended to your screen name and you may be placed in a waiting room queue before being admitted to the session.

Google

Select the Sign in with Google button (Fig 1.2) to use your existing Google account credentials.

Facebook

Select the Sign in with Facebook button (Fig 1.3) to use your existing Facebook account credentials.

Zoom personal account

If you have a Zoom personal account that is not licensed under Minnesota State:

  1. Enter the email address you used to create that account and the account password in the fields on the left (Fig 1.4).
  2. Select the Sign In button
