Upload a video to MediaSpace

When you upload a video to MediaSpace, a copy of your video is transported from your device to your MediaSpace account in the cloud. Once the file has been uploaded, it is processed by MediaSpace to allow you to edit, play, and share it. The amount of time this takes depends on several factors, including the length of the video, the size of the video file, and the performance of your network connection. Although it may happen much faster, expect to wait approximately twice the length of the video (e.g., 20-minute wait time for a 10-minute video) for the process to complete.

Recent testing results

Tests on February 7th, 2020 involved uploading videos captured using Kaltura Capture 4.2.29 (webcam and desktop both set to record at 1080p) on a MacBook Pro laptop:

• Recording length – 60 seconds, file size 70 MB, upload (campus-wired) 30 seconds, processing 90 seconds, total time 2 minutes
• Recording length – 60 minutes, file size 3 GB, upload (campus-wireless) 9 minutes, processing 45 minutes, total time 54 minutes

Pro tips

• Uploading something to the Internet is always slower than downloading something (e.g., viewing a web page)
• Video upload time is affected by the quality of your network connection (e.g., on-campus wired, on-campus wireless, home network)
• Processing time is affected by the quality of the file. Files outside the recommended file settings (e.g., massive, uncompressed) will take longer to process
• Kaltura Capture, the tool packaged with MediaSpace, creates video files tuned to our MediaSpace instance
• There are times when the MediaSpace service and/or our campus network are under heavy load and the process can take longer than usual. Peak campus network usage time is 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
