About this article

This article provides instructions for downloading, installing, using, and updating Respondus Lockdown Browser (LDB). It is intended for all students using Desire2Learn quizzes configured by their instructors for LDB.

What's LDB?

Faculty may require students to install Lockdown Browser prior to taking an exam. If it is required it is recommended to install the browser in advance of the exam to allow enough time to complete the install successfully. Once installed, complete the following steps to start your exam:

  1. Close all applications running on your computer. Note: LDB will not open until you have closed the applications and will prompt you to close anything that is open.
  2. Launch LDB on your desktop to access the course exam.
  3. Lockdown Browser will open directly to the D2L Login sceen, so proceed by logging in.
  4. Once you are logged in select your course and go to quizzes.
  5. As you are taking your exam, save each question answered.
  6. After you submit your exam, you will be able to close the Lockdown Browser.

IMPORTANT! Once you start a D2L quiz in LDB, you will be unable to do anything else on your computer until you submit the quiz. Once you submit the quiz, you will be able to use your computer normally.

Installing LDB

  • Important note: Make sure to install to your specific hard drive (i.e., Macbook Pro 13) and be sure NOT to install to "All users on this computer."

Updating LDB

The current version of LDB is Version 1.0.5.14 , August 14, 2013 for the PC and Version 1.0.5.12 , August 15, 2013 for the Mac. You can check your version using the following steps:

  1. Open up your existing version of LDB on your computer. You will be prompted to close any open application. Do so.
  2. From the row of icons at the top of the LDB window, select the Information - Settings icon (the blue circle with the lower case i inside). This will open an Information screen that will list your current version.

If your version is out of date, re-install LDB by downloading it and installing it again. You do not need to delete your current version and will be given a re-install option when you install the new version. Although there is a Check for Newer Version button on the information screen, it will only detect major updates to the program, not minor updates. LDB has not had a major update in years, so this button is pretty useless. We have raised this issue with Respondus and will keep you posted. Until then, just re-install the application to update.
