Message some people might receive:

“Print Queue Stark203h is not valid” (where "Stark203h" represents a printer on which the user is trying to print a hard-copy of an ISRS Application report)

The following is a change in the ISRS application printing. As a result of the ITS strategic work plan project to migrate the ISRS application processing from the HP VMS operating system servers to Red Hat Enterprise Linux servers, the decision has been made to only implement a subset of the print queues that existed on the VMS systems onto the Linux systems. MinnState ITS System Office turned off all VMS ISRS functionality on 5/21/2018, to include printing from the VMS servers.

The VMS print queues are used by campus end users choosing to direct print or reprint ISRS reports and process outputs from the application servers to network printers on each campus. Analysis & consultation with campus Business units allowed the MinnState ITS System Office to identify and implement the more heavily used print queues to be re-created on the Linux systems. Note: Not all VMS queues will be re-created with an emphases on PDF printing instead.

Functionality has been introduced into the ISRS desktop application so that a PDF version of text output can be viewed and printed on the end user workstation (see attached email). A majority of the ISRS reports can now be viewed as a PDF. As the PDF view functionality continues to grow, nearly all text output will be able to be viewed and printed locally as a PDF. The goal is to reduce the need for application server print queues almost entirely. Currently a handful of print jobs continue to come from our VMS systems, of those, 90+ percent can be viewed as PDF.

Two important changes going forward that you need to be aware of:

  1. The ISRS desktop application will be changed to validate the existence of a print queue when printing of report output is requested. If the queue is not valid, but the report output can be viewed as a PDF, end users will be guided to submit the report so that the output can be viewed and printed locally.
  2. MinnState ITS System Office asks that any requests for a new/updated ISRS application server print queue be submitted with the approval of the CIO at the institution, with explanation why direct printing is required. This request should be made by submitting a Cherwell ticket.

Over time, the ITS System Office Operations staff will provide a summary of the direct printing that is taking place to each institution. We ask that you help assist us in reducing the number of application server print queues in place to only those required by the application processing. Official Transcripts and Financial Aid letters would be examples of direct print requirements.
