When you started at WSU you were given a username and password for the WSU network.

A password is a secret string of words or characters (possibly including characters, numbers, etc.) that is entered or stated for authentication. Winona State University emphasizes that your password is something that you should keep to yourself and not tell anyone else. Your passwords are the key to unlocking crucial information and full permissions to use your computer to its complete potential. It is important that you memorize your passwords or keep them all in a safe place if you decide to write them down.

WSU Password Information

  • Computers are automatically set to lock after 15 minutes of idle time (i.e., an inactivity lock) for any faculty or staff member with access to non-public data.
  • Individuals with access to sensitive data are encouraged to lock their computers upon leaving their workstations.
  • Unencrypted storage of passwords is prohibited. Passwords must not be written down or stored without using a password-safe application.

WSU Password Guidelines

  1. Do not give your password to anyone! Everyone has their own personal password. Personal passwords may not be shared.
  2. Passwords must be unique and at least 8-characters in length, with a mixture of mixed-case alpha and numeric characters.
  3. Your network account will lock after 5 failed login attempts.
  4. Passwords will expire after 180 days. New passwords cannot match any of your previous 20 passwords. You will be notified of pending password expiration via email starting 30 days prior to your password expiration date. Instructions for changing your password are different depending on whether you use a Mac or PC. Employee WSU Password Information
