A compressed or zipped file is a file or a group of files that have been packaged together and compressed both for easy file transfer and to save disc space. Compressed files are typically denoted by a .zip extension. Both Windows and Mac OS come with software to "unzip" or "extract" these files. This is usually done by right-clicking on the zip file and choosing some variation of "Extract Here."

Other programs, such as 7-Zip, can be downloaded and installed to use for extracting zip files as well.
