Instructors can add Brightspace grade items to their grade book to share grade data with students. Brightspace supports several item types besides numeric, including text, pass/no credit, and formula-based grades.

Grade item types

  • Numeric. Assign a value out of a specified total number of points (e.g, 8/10)
  • Selectbox. Select the grade scheme level that best matches the student's achievement (e.g., "Very Good" or "B")
  • Pass/Fail. Assign a simple pass/fail grade scheme (e.g., "Pass" or "No Credit"
  • Formula. Automatically apply a custom formula based on achievement on other grade items (e.g., give students who received at least 50% on all participation grade items a perfect attendance bonus)
  • Calculated. Calculate students' cumulative achievement across multiple grade items (e.g., Midterm Grade=A1+A2+Q1+Q2 / Total Max. Points * 100 = 73%
  • Text

Add a grade item

  1. From your Brightspace course, select Grades from the Assessments menu at the top of the page.
  2. Select the Manage Grades tab
  3. Select the New button and select the type of grade item you wish to add
  4. Set the grade item's properties in the Properties tab and select Save and Close. Fields in the Properties tab will differ depending on grade item type and whether you are using a Points or Weighted grading system. All grade item types require the specification of a Name. This name will be displayed in the student view of the grade book. Use the Short Name field to add a shorter name as the column header in your grade book. You can also set restrictions on the grade item and associate it with objectives you added using the Competencies tool using the corresponding tabs.

Other types of grade items

There are several other types of grade items available in the Brightspace grade book, including things like pass/fail and grades that are created by a formula. To add those types of items to the grade book, refer to the Brightspace support article on creating grade items.
