About this article

This article reviews how to add captions to MediaSpace content. It is intended for all WSU students and employees.

What is machine-based transcription?

In MediaSpace, you can request that your audio and video files be transcribed, not by a human being, but by software capable of converting your speech to text. This software will do the best it can to accurately recognize your speech. However, the resulting transcription will not be 100% accurate and you will have the option to correct it using a built-in editor in MediaSpace. Unedited machine-based transcriptions will typically not be compliant with the Americans with Disability Act (ADA), so correction will be necessary. You can add other MediaSpace users to your files as co-editors and they can help you correct the transcription. The transcription can be presented as both closed captions displayed on the video playback window and a downloadable transcript. Users can disable and enable the captions themselves. Transcribing a lengthy video by hand is a painstaking and time-consuming process. The MediaSpace machine-based transcription process will, in most cases, reduce that workload considerably. Watch the MediaSpace Captioning playlist for an overview of this process and contact TLT (tlt@winona.edu) with any questions.
