Creating interactive video quizzes in MediaSpace
About this article
This article includes instructions for adding an interactive video quiz to a MediaSpace video using the Video Quiz tool. It is intended for all WSU students and employees.
What's an interactive video quiz?
In MediaSpace, you can use the Video Quiz tool to create a copy of an existing video and add simple, embedded quiz questions. Playback stops at the point in the video where you inserted a question and viewers are prompted to answer the question before the video continues. Interactive video quizzes can be used to add interest to your videos and reinforce learning.
Can I get data from my interactive video quiz?
Yes, but the information will vary based on how your viewers access the interactive video quiz. If you allow anonymous, guest access to the video, then you will be able to retrieve the average quiz score as well as individual scores, but you will not be able to identity the viewers by name. If you require viewers to log into their MediaSpace accounts before they can access the video, then you will be able to identify quiz scores by name.

How do I build an interactive video quiz?
Watch the Interactive Video Quiz: Create video for an overview of this process. When creating an interactive video quiz, keep in mind that a copy of an existing video is used, leaving the original video untouched. You would then need to share or embed this new interactive video quiz anywhere that you used the original video. Also note that there are several ways that you can configure interactive video quizzes to meet your needs.
Step 1: Select your video
- Use your favorite web browser to login to your MediaSpace account at mediaspace.minnstate.edu using your Star ID username and password. This will take you to your My Media page.
- Select Video Quiz from the Add New menu (Fig 1).
- Select the video to which you would like to add quiz questions. This will open a copy of the video into the Quiz Editor.
Step 2: Configure your quiz
In the quiz editor, you will step through three panels of quiz settings (Fig 2), selecting Apply to move to the next panel. Return to previous panels by selecting Back or the three stacked dots icon in the upper left corner of each panel. Configure the settings in each panel:
- General: All the these settings are applied to the opening frame of the video that provides viewers with information about the quiz before the video starts. Enter a name for the interactive video quiz and modify the welcome message. You can choose whether to display the In-Video Tip and whether to allow viewers to download a list of the quiz questions before they start watching the video.
- Experience: Choose whether you want viewers to be able to go back and change their answers or skip a question and return to it when they reach the end of the video before submitting the quiz.
- Score: These settings apply to what viewers see after they submit their answers. Choose whether or not you want to show viewers their overall quiz score and the answers to the questions.
- Add Questions: This panel does not include any settings. It provides instructions for adding quiz questions.
Step 3: Add quiz questions
To add quiz questions, begin playing the video. Pause it when you get to a point where you would like to add a question. A blue hexagon will appear in the playback window. Select it. This will open the question editor (Fig 3). Now you can construct a question with the following properties:
- Add the actual question in the space provided.
- Enter the correct answer to the question in the designated response option
- Enter incorrect response options. Select the black hexagon to add up to two more response options.
- Reorder the response options using either the Shuffle button or by manually dragging and dropping them.
- Add hints and feedback by selecting the hexagon with the light bulb. Select Hint to add a hint that will be visible before the viewer answers the question and select Why to add feedback that will be visible after the viewer submits the quiz, if you decide to make answers available in the Score settings.
- Select Save to save the question to the video timeline and continue playing the video or Delete to start over.
Selecting sharing permissions
When you upload media to your MediaSpace account, you will need to select one of three file sharing permission settings. This setting can be changed later, so pick the setting that best applies at the moment:
- Private: Only you will be able to access the file. If you are embedding the video into Desire2Learn, you can leave this setting as private.
- Unlisted: Only those with a link to the file that you provide will be able to access it. Select this option if you want to share your video using a direct link to the video that you might share via email.
- Published: File will be visible to individuals if it's published in channels where they have viewing rights.
Interactive video quiz tips
- Once you have saved a question, you can move it backward and forward on the timeline to position it in a different location in the video. Preview the video to see if the question is in the right location.
- You can go back and edit quiz questions in interactive video quizzes at any time by selecting Edit Quiz on the Actions menu of the media page.
- Shuffle the ordinal position of the correct answer in your list of response options. You don't want the first option to be the correct answer for every question.
- Use quiz questions to break up long stretches of video, focus the viewer's attention on important points, and help viewers see hidden connections.
