Instructors teaching courses with required in-person class meetings this fall should be prepared to handle student COVID status information communicated to you by your students themselves. Students may inform you that they have tested positive for COVID and need to isolate or that they had contact with someone who tested positive and need to quarantine.

Immediate emergency medical assistance

If a student contacts you who is in need of immediate emergency medical assistance, ask the student to call 911 or call 911 on that student's behalf if necessary.

Do not disclose private information

The result of a COVID test is confidential, private information. If a student reveals the result to you, you are not permitted to disclose that information to anyone.

Do not come to campus

WSU asks students and faculty not to come to campus if they have COVID-19 symptoms or test positive for COVID-19. Instructors can advise students not to come to in-person class meetings in these cases.

Isolation versus quarantine

Students will be asked to isolate for a period of time if they test positive for COVID-19. Students who come in contact with someone who tests positive may be asked to quarantine, however this may depend on their vaccination status. Current CDC guidelines for vaccinated individuals who have had contact with someone testing positive for COVID are as follows:

If you’ve had close contact with someone who has COVID-19, you should get tested 3-5 days after your exposure, even if you don’t have symptoms. You should also wear a mask indoors in public for 14 days following exposure or until your test result is negative. You should isolate for 10 days if your test result is positive.

Self-disclosure

You can encourage all your students to self-disclose their COVID-19 status through the Winona State University COVID-19 Self-Report Form. This form allows anyone to choose one of the statements below, enter their name, and submit the form. Once a positive diagnosis or contact is disclosed, the student may be contacted and contact tracing may begin.

  • I have been exposed to a confirmed case of COVID-19
  • I have been exposed to a potential case of COVID-19
  • I have been tested for COVID-19 but am awaiting results
  • I have tested positive for COVID-19
  • I have been vaccinated against COVID-19
