Solutions Since Last Stump = 1 |

This article describes the Stump Norb challenge hosted by Norb Thomes, Learning Systems and Services Coordinator and Tablet Evangelist from TLT. It is intended for all members of the WSU community.
What's Stump Norb?
Norb encourages any WSU student, instructor, or staff member to present him with a challenge or problem related to integrating tablets into teaching and learning. Norb will either find a solution or admit that he is stumped. In some cases, Norb may present a solution over the phone or via email. Other challenges may require a face-to-face meeting to better understand your needs and requirements. Just send an inquiry to nthomes@winona.edu or @njthomes. As Norb says, "No challenge is too big. No fee is too big."
What do I get if I stump Norb?
Coffee with Norb, Norb's treat.
Challenges
Peter Sternberg February 11th, 2015, Making Outbreaks More Engaging
- The problem: Dr. Sternberg is using Solve the Outbreak, a tablet application produced by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in his Epidemiology class this term. Students use the application to investigate hypothetical disease outbreaks, develop their data analysis skills, discover the cause of the outbreak, and determine ways the outbreak could have been prevented. While the application is information-rich, Dr. Sternberg wanted to make the activity more engaging to promote higher-level thinking.
- A solution: Dr. Sternberg is going to use Top Hat to associate discussion topics with each case study in the Solve the Outbreak application. As teams work through the cases, they will be responsible for responding to the topics using Top Hat on their tablets. Dr. Sternberg will use this online discussion to validate their understanding and seed deeper, face-to-face discussions in the classroom.
- Why use Top Hat for discussions instead of D2L? Top Hat discussions are great for interactive work because Top Hat supports "liking" of answers in the threads and is a bit more nimble for use on tablets in class. Discussion answers can be voted on by the students as part of the classroom activity, with the results of the voting available immediately.
