Intended Audience

WSU instructors currently using Brightspace and interested in using electronic portfolios in their Brightspace courses.

Overview

This article describes the steps involved in using the Brightspace ePortfolio tool to add artifacts, tags, and collections to an ePortfolio.

Some Definitions

What is an artifact?

An artifact is an individual piece of evidence that demonstrates learning has occurred.

Examples of artifacts include:

  • Links
  • Uploaded files
  • Web documents

  • Audio recordings
  • Form responses
  • Course results

What is a tag?

Tags are keywords you assign to your artifacts to help identify them and to make them easier to find in a search. Artifacts can have more than one tag.

What is a collection?

Collections are groups of artifacts, reflections, presentations, and learning modules. Ani item can belong to more than one collection.

What is a presentation?

Presentations are a compilation of artifacts into a multi-paged showcase of your achievements. Presentations have themes similar to websites. Presentations are often used to display work to others in the outside world.

Creating and Adding Items and Collections

A portfolio is a collection, curation, and display area for artifacts that represent the skills and knowledge of the owner. Therefore, a portfolio (whether electronic or a more traditional medium) is worthless without its artifacts.

Artifacts can include papers, videos, podcasts, photographs, audio recordings, reflections, or whatever the curator decides in important. Over time, the curator of the site can add, reorganize, or remove artifacts as needed.

Creating and adding artifacts through the Brightspace ePortfolio tool is the first step.

  • Create an Artifact lists the steps in creating an artifact, tagging it for future searching, and setting up assessment tools. Here is an additional video that shows adding artifacts to an ePortfolio. (The sound is a little low so you will need to turn up your volume.)
  • Create and Add Items to a Collection defines a Collection as a group of related artifacts within the ePortfolio. It further explains how to add artifacts to the Collection and add assessment tools. Here is an additional video that demonstrates how to create a collection and add artifacts to it. (The sound is a little low so you will need to turn up your volume.)
  • Use Tags to Add Items to a Collection describes how to add items to a Collection by using tags. These tags can be used to automatically move artifacts into the Collection. Here is an additional video that shows how to add private tags to an artifact. Currently, only private tags are supported. (The sound is a little low so you will need to turn up your volume.)
