STARS Stands for Student Technology And Resource Specialists. These are students that work part time in the Technical Support Center to provide technology based services for students, faculty and staff of Winona State. These STARS are assigned to teams throughout the Information Technology (IT) department. There are approximately 100 students hired throughout the year as STARS. They will enjoy the benefits of on the job work experience that will make them more attractive to potential employers. Students from all disciplines are encouraged to apply.

Who Can Apply

All WSU students are encouraged to apply if interested. Student that qualify for work study can apply for work study positions. There are student help positions available for those that do not qualify for work study.

When We Have Openings

Our job openings are posted on the Winona State Career Services job posting site. If interested follow the instructions to submit your application. All applications that are on file are looked through and selected students are notified via email to come in for an interview.

All STARS applications are kept on file for one year. Students need to submit a new application each year.

STAR Responsibilities

Students are hired with all levels of experience. Students that have good customer service skills can start at the Front Desk. If they desire to learn more about mobile devices they can move to other teams. For instance, students that would like the experience of training/supporting other students with software technology can join the e-Warrior Digital Learning Commons Team while students that like hands-on type work can join the wiring or hardware repair teams. There are also advanced positions that work with the network administrators or programmers along with many PC and Mac technician jobs.


Once hired, STARS are assigned to one of the following teams:

  • Front Desk
  • Walk-In
  • e-Warrior Digital Learning Commons (DLC)
  • Hardware Repair
  • Onsite
  • Network
  • Media Services
  • Phone Support
  • Programming
  • Wiring
  • Teaching, Learning & Technology

Work Hours

Students work during normal business hours around their class schedule. When working around classes, a two hour minimum is required. Most students work 15-20 hours per week. Some of the work areas require a minimum of 15 hours a week. During the summer, some positions require that students work more hours.
