Searching For Open Content

Searching for Open Content is sometimes frustrating during the creative process to find the best audio track or image to make your project come to life. This is often in tension with other content creators' intellectual property. Just when you find a good image, song, video, or resource you find out it holds Copyright. Finding open content or media that holds one of the many different [[Creative_Commons_License| Creative Commons Licenses] can be a bit frustrating. However, in the Advanced Search mode of Google you can filter out content that you could use for projects. This article covers the process for conducting Advanced Searchers within Google for specific Use Rights.

Advaced Search within Google

Go to https://www.google.com/ and type in the type of content you are looking for. This will yield everything that is currently on the internet for that search and we need to filter it down to what you are looking for. To filter down to open content you will need to do the following.

1. Select the Settings menu and choose Advanced Search.

2. Make sure your text in the search is correct and scroll down the Useage Rights and choose the option that works best for you. If you choose the free to use and share the search will give you the largest search for open content on the internet. Know that if you choose free to use, share or modify, even commercially it will be a smaller list of content.
