Instructors teaching fully in-person, blended, or mostly online courses this fall will should revise their unscheduled absence policies to accommodate students who miss class meetings for COVID-related reasons. These sample unscheduled absence syllabus statements can be copied, pasted, and edited without permission or attribution.

Statement 1: General statement about supporting remote students

As we learn together this fall, [I/WSU am/is] committed to helping you complete this course successfully through any delivery mode necessary. I am prepared to support any student who cannot attend our in-person class meetings for COVID-related reasons and will do my best to make the experience as seamless and engaging as possible. If you are required to isolate, quarantine, or have any health concerns that prevent you from attending class meetings, please contact me via [communication channel] at [contact information] to discuss your options for continuing the course remotely.

Statement 2: Live online access

In this course, you have the option to join our scheduled class meetings live online using Zoom, our supported web conferencing tool, if you need to isolate or quarantine for COVID-related reasons. You will be expected to participate as you would in our classroom meetings. Instructions for joining our Zoom sessions and participating in class meetings remotely will be provided.

Statement 3: Recordings of live class sessions

In this course, you have the option to watch an online video recording of any missed class meeting if you need to isolate or quarantine for COVID-related reasons. You will have opportunities to ask questions and interact with classmates online, as you would in the classroom. Instructions for accessing these videos, submitting related questions, and engaging in online activities will be provided.

Statement 4: Alternative online activities

In this course, you have the option to engage in online learning that covers the same material and activities as any missed class meeting if you need to isolate or quarantine for COVID-related reasons. You will have opportunities to interact with your classmates and ask questions, as you would in the classroom. Instructions for accessing these online activities will be provided.
