Intended Audience

This article is intended for instructors interested in using Brightspace Assignment Submission tool to quickly access student submissions that require assessment.

Overview

The Assignment Submission tool allows instructors to see and evaluate learner submissions. One of the key benefits of using this tool is that it integrates seamlessly with the Grade Tool allowing you to simultaneously proof, provide feedback, and grade submissions to Assignments. One helpful component of this tool is that you can download all of these papers at once in case you need to grade offline and then uploaded graded works once you are connected again.

Add feedback to Assignment Submission Folder

  1. On the navbar, click Assessments.
  2. On the Assignments page, enter the Assignment you would like to provide feedback.
  3. Click on the name of the individual student who has submitted to your Assignment Submission Folder.
  4. If only one document submitted it will show you the Annotate a Brightspace assignment submission view which you can learn more about in our Annotate a Brightspace assignment submission article. If there are multiple documents you can choose from the contextual menu to the right of the file name to view or download the document.
  5. On the right side of the individual student view you can pull up a rubric that is associated with the Assignment (see Fig. 1.1), enter total points (Fig 1.2), enter text feedback in the textbox (1.3), if you downloaded it and made edits to the submitted files you can upload that version by using the Add a File button (1.4), and a short audio feedback file can be recorded by clicking on the Record Audio button (1.4).

Grading Assignments

There are two ways you can grade files submitted to Assignments. Most work online to grade papers and other files. Other times you may be working in a space where the internet connection is poor or you do not have access and want to work on grading offline. The following videos explain how you can assess submissions, whether you grade them online or choose to download, grade offline, and upload grades and feedback once you are connected.

Using the Assignment Annotation Tool

The Annotation Tool allows you to provide quick feedback to student files without having to open their original documents. Available annotations allow you to draw freehand comments, highlights, and comments (via sticky notes) over the document much like you would on a paper document submitted for grading. Once published, students can see your annotations and download a PDF copy of their document with your annotations included.

To annotate follow the steps below:

  1. From within your Brightspace course, select Assignments from the Assessments menu.
  2. Select the desired Assignment folder.
  3. Select the student's submission. The document will open in a preview window. The annotation toolbar will be at the top of that window (Fig 1).
  4. Use the annotation tools to add annotations.
  5. Select the Publish button to save your annotations and release them for the student to review. Select the Save Draft button if you are not finished annotating and do not want the student to review your annotations yet. Return later to continue annotating.
