While you find many groups on just about any topic and any size, the use of Discord in this class will be to provide you a space (SERVER Name HERE) for communicating as a backchannel in class.
What's Discord?
For many, this is the way they communicate with all their friends and family. The gaming community was first to adopt this tool widely it is grown to include all sorts of communities and groups. The tool allows you to have one spot where you can connect with all your different interests. Some terms might be useful to know when using this tool.
- Server: Servers are where you create your unique space to meet and connect with your classmates (for this assignment) and friends.
- Channel: In Discord, you will find servers are by function (text and voice) and each will have different rules. A text channel will allow users to post messages and upload files or share images. A voice channel gives you the functionality of synchronously communicating with voice, video, and share your screen.
- DMs and GDMs: This is simply the function of direct messaging and group messaging. While a DM can be with one person you can invite up to nine others to DM. The Group DM (GDM) is a non-public communication space that will require an invitation from someone in the group.
