When not in use iPads can be put to sleep or locked using the sleep/wake button located on the top right of the iPad. This, however, does not turn off the iPad; it will continue to play music, download email, and receive push notifications while in sleep mode.
To turn off the iPad completely and preserve battery life while preventing unintended use hold down the sleep/wake button until the red slider appears. Slide the red slider to the right to power down the iPad.
To turn the iPad back on hold down the sleep/wake button until the Apple logo appears.
