The COVID In-person Course Readiness Checklist presents the new, COVID-related tasks that instructors teaching courses with in-person class meetings may need to complete before the first day of the fall term, Monday, August 23rd. Not all checklist items apply to every course and some courses will have unique, course-specific tasks that are not included in this checklist.
Checklist items
- Select and acquire your PPE. On August 4th, 2021, WSU implemented a mask requirement in all classrooms for the start of the fall term. Determine whether you will wear a face covering, face shield, both, or neither while teaching and whether you would like a mobile Plexiglas barrier installed in the front of the classroom. Contact Facilities (facilities@winona.edu) if you are interested in a Plexiglas barrier. Contact TLT (tlt@winona.edu) if you need a clear mask or face shield.
- Decide on voice amplification. Based on your classroom size, your mask usage decision, and your speaking volume, decide whether you will need voice amplification during your class meetings. Contact TLT (tlt@winona.edu) for assistance.
- Reserve additional meeting spaces. If you plan to hold class meetings outside and/or meet students in-person during office hours in a conference or classroom, reserve that space using our Campus Room Scheduling System. Update your course calendar for those days you plan to meet outdoors.
- Update your student absence policy. Decide what you will do to support students who need to isolate or quarantine during the semester and add this information to your syllabus. Contact TLT (tlt@winona.edu) for support with live streaming or recording class activities, producing lecture or lab videos outside of class time, and developing alternative activities for students who can't attend class meetings.
- Add public health behavior expectations. Add any class, room, or activity-specific public health behavior expectations (e.g., mask usage, social distancing, handling physical objects in class) to your syllabus, especially if they modify general campus guidance. Also include expectations related to interactions with students outside of class time.
- Acquire personal classroom supplies. Assemble a set of required classroom supplies you normally share with colleagues (e.g., dry erase markers, eraser) that you can keep with you and use throughout the semester. Contact TLT (tlt@winona.edu) if your department has not made plans to distribute those supplies to you.
- Plan for your own absence. Decide what you will do if you have to isolate or quarantine at some point during the semester.
- Develop a seating chart for your classroom. Although contact tracing is coordinated at the state level, one thing that instructors can do to help is use assigned seats and keep a seating chart wherever possible. Contact TLT (tlt@winona.edu) for help using technology to accomplish this.
- Prepare for the possible switch to online delivery. Develop a plan for switching your course to online delivery should the need arise. Consider adding a related statement to your syllabus to help set student expectations.
