Frequently asked questions
Why do you have to configure my laptop?
WSU builds a laptop software package that has standard software every user will need (e.g. Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, browsers, etc.), but we do not load discipline specific software, unique media players, or printers so that you can load the tools you use. Printers are the more obvious illustration of why we don't do all the configuring of your laptop so that you can select the specific one that best meets your needs.
Where are all my software applications?
Users across campus have unique software applications, apps, or media players that they prefer to use. Java is an excellent example of a web based language that many sites use for running different tools or services and over the years many will require different versions to run these tools. While we load a stand package of software onto your laptop we also provide you access to software we purchase and you can load on the network for free download. Media players and other applications designed with browser extensions are often linked to the correct version somewhere on the page you are trying to use. If you are having difficulty finding or using one of these tools contact the TSC or stop in to TLT and a staff member will help you find the correct tool you are looking for.
What if I don't see my printer?
One of the surprises as you come back on campus is that our printer list is not complete and we don't see the one we prefer to use. This can be an issue of the device being turned off for the summer. The installation of new printers with different locations or models will make it difficult to find the printer you prefer to use. However, sometimes the printer has been sequestered off of public spaces and you may need to go back to your office or workplace to see the specific printer you use. The following articles Setting up Printers on a Mac guides you through the process of setting up a network printer on your Mac.
How do you use the Touch Bar and Touch ID?
The Touch Bar and Touch ID are designed to provide contextual function keys that change with every application and tab you have open. The Touch Bar will allow software designers to update functionality that is added as the program is updated. Below is a great introduction to the Touch Bar.
