Move files from network storage to OneDrive

As you become more comfortable using Microsoft OneDrive cloud-based file storage, you may want to move files from network storage to OneDrive. This will allow you to take advantage of OneDrive's convenience and avoid having to use a VPN when off campus to access local network storage. There are several ways to move files stored in your network folders to your OneDrive.

Private data and OneDrive

Aside from social security numbers, credit card numbers, and some financial records, you can store private university data (e.g., student grades, employee performance evaluations, employment records) in your OneDrive.

Instructions

Step 1: Connect to your network storage

Before you begin moving your files, make sure you are connected to your network storage folders.

Step 2: Open your OneDrive

  1. In your web browser, navigate to your Microsoft 365 homepage.
  2. Open your OneDrive by selecting the App launcher "waffle" in the upper left (Fig 1.1) and then selecting the OneDrive icon from the list of apps (Fig 1.2).
  3. Select My Files in the lefthand menu bar.
  4. Select the the Add New button (Fig 2.1) and then select either Files Upload or Folder Upload (Fig 2.2).

Step 3: Upload your files to OneDrive

PC/Windows user

  1. Select the files or folders in your network folders to upload to OneDrive.
  2. Once you are sure you have uploaded the files to OneDrive, you can delete the copy from your network folder.

Mac user

  1. From the Finder window, select Store under Locations in the lefthand navigation bar. Select Users and then your StarID to open the contents of your personal network storage (Fig 3). Select Department and then the department's name to open the contents of your department network storage.
  2. Select the files or folders to upload to OneDrive.
  3. Once you are sure you have uploaded the files to OneDrive, you can delete the copy in your network folder.
