About This Article

This article describes how mobile computing, specifically tablets, was piloted in Prof. Amy Reitmaier's NURS 353 Professional Practice II to transform teaching and learning.

Intended Audience

WSU instructors interested in past faculty experience with tablet devices in the classroom.

Spring 2013 iPad Pilot

Students in this course had access to an iPad tablet to use throughout the spring semester along with several apps selected by Dr. Reitmaier for use in class and in the field.

How the iPads were Used in NURS 353

Professor Reitmaier's students used the iPads as part of their clinical exercises. Careplans were developed on the devices using mind-mapping applications. Drug interactions were investigated. eTextbooks were used to lighten the load on the backpack as well as save the students some money. Notes were taken in Evernote and files saved and shared through Dropbox.

Dr. Reitmaier had the following objectives in mind during her pilot:

  • Determine whether nursing students could use iPads effectively in clinicals. Would the iPads be effective tools in the clinical setting? Does their size and format work well in the clinical environment? Are iPads viable reference tools? Would clinics allow iPads in the medical setting or are their issues with things like patient privacy?

Outcomes

Changes in the classroom

iPads proved to be viable tools in clinicals when allowed by the hosting facility.

Recommendations

Future challenges will include how to incorporate iPads into the classroom setting. Some obvious steps can be taken immediately (e.g. use of iPads as ebook readers) but true mainstreaming will include additional planning and piloting.
