Tablets and the OR 100 Curriculum

For the first time in WSU history, all students in the eWarrior Digital Life and Learning program enter the Fall 2014 semester with both a laptop and a tablet device.
This article gives a quick recap of lessons available in D2L for inclusion of tablet technology in OR 100.
Applying Apps in the Classroom
Course Learning Objectives
2. To increase students’ knowledge of academic expectations in a university setting.
Lesson Objective
Through this assignment students will identify a minimum of four tablet applications and reflect on how they can be used for academic success within their courses.
Demonstrable Skills
At the end of the lesson, the student will
- Examine several apps that could be used as an academic tool in WSU courses.
- Experience the process of researching and determining academic apps within the App Store.

3. To increase students’ knowledge of WSU policies, procedures, resources and services.
6. To facilitate students’ Career Planning /Choosing a Major.
Lesson Objective
Upon completion of this lessons students will research careers and use a variety of career research tools.
Demonstrable Skills
At the end of the lesson students will
- Complete an Excel spread sheet with specific information about three jobs they are interested in.
- Identify useful career tools on the iPad.
- Identify useful WSU career resources.

4. To increase understanding of current issues and challenges facing college students and learn ways to better meet those challenges.

Upon completion of this lesson, students will track and reflect on their personal spending.
Demonstrable Skills
At the end of the lesson, the students will
- Create a categorized record of their spending.
- Reflect on their person spending habits.
- Create a Word document of the most important information to tell incoming freshman about spending.

Lesson Objective
Through this assignment, students will identify a variety WSU social media outlets. They will research information about the activities, resources, clubs, technology, groups, and contests offered on WSU’s campus and actively participate with the social media pages.

At the end of the lesson, students will
- Connect with the Winona State University Facebook page.
- Connect with the Winona State Information Technology Services Facebook page.
- Visit 10 Winona State Social Media Pages.
- Participate on one of the social media pages.

5. To develop a sense of community among students, faculty, and staff at WSU.
Lesson Objective
Upon completion of this activity, students will use an audience polling applications and reflect on several freshmen specific topics.
Demonstrable Skills
At the end of the lesson, students
- Participate in group icebreaker.
- Demonstrate the functions of the polling app Top Hat.

In this assignment students will utilize iBooks and the WSU Wiki Knowledge Base. They will demonstrate knowledge of basic iPad and WSU technology functions.

At the end of the lesson, the student will
- Store, categorize, and archive photos and videos.
- Find and install applications from the app store.
- Perform simple configuration of the tablet.
- Use the camera to record events.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the iOS applications on the tablet.
- Read and annotate an ebook.

Course Lesson Objectives
1. To increase students’ knowledge of the elements and approaches that enhance and impeded effective college performance.
Lesson Objective
Through this activity, students will develop a working knowledge of two note taking apps. They will prepare for note taking on the iPad for other classes. They will take notes using their iPad.
Demonstrable Skills
At the end of the lesson, students will
- Take notes on their iPad during a presentation using a note taking app.
- Compare and contrast two note taking apps.
- Review basic setup and functions of two note taking apps.
- Create an organized space on the ipad for taking notes in each class.

At the end of the lesson, students
- Track nutritional habits for a week.
- Use useful wellness apps and WSU wellness resource tools.
- Create a personal nutrition and wellness goal for the rest of the semester.

Lesson Objective
Through this teambuilding activity students will locate specific locations on Winona States Campus. Students will also utilize several Apps and functions on their WSU iPad.
Demonstrable Skills
At the end of the lesson, the student will
- Capture still images and video using the iPad's Camera application.
- Retrieve and share images and video from Photos.
- Create a presentation on the iPad using Powerpoint.
- Locate and explore information about WSU through the WSU iPhone application and other resources.
